Minds on a Rampage

After a couple months
Of being married
Cecilia and I
Were still getting
Used to being together.
In my rush
To get to work
One morning
I forgot the key
To our apartment.
I figured Cecilia
Would be able to
Let me in
Because she always
Got home from work
Before I did,
But when I came home,
She was nowhere
To be found.
I assumed
She had gone
To the store
And would be back shortly,
So I settled in to wait.
After an hour,
I was getting concerned.
After two hours,
I began imaging
All sorts of evil possibilities.
After three hours,
I was convinced
She had left me,
But I couldn’t figure out
What I had done
To drive her away.
When she finally showed up
Four hours later,
I had become
Totally unglued.
I had invented
A thousand wicked scenarios,
Each more horrific
Than the last.
I was relieved
Just to see her alive
After all the thoughts
That had been
Running rampant
Through my brain.
As luck would have it,
That was the one night,
The first since
We had been married,
She worked overtime.
Someone at work was sick,
And she covered for them.
That was probably
The only scenario
I hadn’t imagined.
She had been trying
To get a hold of me as well,
And had her own imaginings,
Equally as vivid as mine,
About why I wasn’t
Answering the phone.
One look at each other
And we burst out laughing
At the ridiculous things
We had been thinking,
Glad to know
None of them were true.
