First Time Parenthood

Cecilia and I
Greeted parenthood
With a sense of
Wonder and awe
Mixed with fear
Over the challenges
Parenting would bring.
We stumble bumbled
Our way through
As best we could,
Inventing parenthood
As we went along,
Learning by experience.
We discovered
That holding someone
Else’s baby
Was not the same
As holding our own,
And that our baby’s cold
Was infinitely worse
Than another baby’s sniffle.
The baby took over
Our world completely,
Dominating every
Waking moment,
As well as our sleep,
And in the process
Radically transformed our lives.
