I enjoyed having a place
Where friends could gather
In informal ease,
Enjoy good food,
A house full of camaraderie,
And a bit of competition.
My house was a spot
Where people came
To unwind without
The influence of liquor,
To enjoy animated conversation,
And escape the hassles of the day.
Sometimes I would have food catered
By a local Thai restaurant,
Or perhaps I would challenge each guest
To bring their favorite dish.
The point was to have the food be great
And the host free to enjoy the night.
My house was an informal site
Where people could come
And ease into a chair
Only to end up on the floor
Around a coffee table
Competing at cards or Scrabble.
We played a wide variety of games,
Including Pictionary, Yatzee,
Hearts or Spades
And occasionally Chess.
I tended to invite people
Who played to win and hated to lose.
One of the things I enjoyed most
About such nights
Was the testy banter
Back and forth,
Adding flavor to each game
And character to the evening.
I loved those playful exchanges
Between good friends
And skilled opponents,
Trying to outdo each other,
Cursing the luck of the draw
And rubbing in their victories.
Unfortunately, I have moved on
Since then, and haven’t yet
Been able to reestablish
That congenial atmosphere
Or the competitive group of friends
I enjoyed so much before.
