I developed an appetite
For watermelon early on,
Back in the good old days
Before the advent
Of the seedless varieties.
I love its juicy sweet taste,
Especially when it’s cold.
At first, I was hindered
By the large number of seeds
Until I learned
To swallow them too!
My mother warned me
They might grow inside me,
And a ludicrous picture
Of vines growing out of my ears
Was planted in my mind,
But that never happened.
It fascinates me
How most people
Will laboriously work
To remove the seeds
When I don’t even notice
They are there.
I teased my children
Whenever we were
In the midst of a watermelon binge,
Telling them they needed to learn
To pick the pieces without seeds,
But they never seemed
To master the skill!
I suppose the seedless varieties
Was invented for people like them.
