Old Friends

Though we had
Known each other
In another life,
We started out
Our conversation
Practically as strangers,
But as we talked,
The years and the distance
Between us melted.
We each had stories to tell,
And one story
Always lead to another.
We talked
About our respective kids
And laughed at all
The crazy things
They had done,
And remembered
That we had done
A lot of the same things
When we were young.
We talked about life,
And the lessons
We had learned
Along the way,
And we talked about
The dreams we had,
The choices we
Each had made,
And what they cost us.
We reminisced
Of times past
And opportunities lost.
It all could have
Happened so differently,
If we had let it,
But there is
A bittersweet beauty
To the way it did.
In the end,
We concluded that
It all worked out
For the better
And so we parted
As good friends
And ancient lovers.
