Jack in a Plexiglas Box

Maybe it is
A sign of the times,
Or just the side of town
That I happen to be on,
But when I stopped
At one of the many
Fast food restaurants
That line the roads
In this part of Los Angeles,
I found a Plexiglas fortress.
It was completely enclosed
In bullet proof Plexiglas
Up to an inch and a half thick.
The employees were
Totally isolated
From the customers
By the thick transparent wall.
Food and money
Were exchanged
Through a protected
Plexiglas drawer.
I could just imagine
The series of events
That justified that expense,
But couldn’t begin to imagine
What it must be like
Working in such a place.
I suppose it is
An economic alternative to
Hazardous duty pay.
