An Economic Sideshow

It is a zone
Of cheap motels,
Low class bars,
Liquor stores
And fast food restaurants
That cater to
The lower end
Working class crowd.
These are people
Struggling to get by
On the fringe
Of survival,
A mixture of whites,
Blacks and Hispanics,
Few of whom
Grew up in this area.
I came for the price.
The motels rent
By the week,
And will suffice
Until I can find
More permanent quarters.
I am sure there is
A community here,
More than meets the eye,
But my initial impression
Is that this area
Has been relegated to
An economic sideshow,
Isolated from
The prosperity
Of the surrounding areas.
