My X and I

The two of us met
In a seminar.
She needed a room
And I needed a renter,
So it worked out perfect
For both of us.
She was a beautiful Spanish lady
With a gorgeous smile,
And long golden blond hair
Who managed
A local salon.
I smile in memory of
One of our first conversations,
Just after she moved in,
When she solemnly revealed
That she wasn’t a real blond,
As if that might
Make a difference.
She used to invite
Her whole family over,
Eight or ten people,
Every other weekend
For a Mexican fiesta.
There is one thing
I definitely admire
About their culture,
They tend to have a strong
Sense of family
And they sure know
How to party.
We got to be
Pretty good friends
Before I sold the house,
And we each went
Our separate ways.
Ever since that time
We refer to each other
As our “Significant X”
Just because it sounds
Much more intriguing
Than former housemates.
It got to be a game we played
Whenever we met,
Especially if there was someone
Clearly interested in the other.
I would see a guy
Checking her out,
And I would go up to her,
Throw my arms around her,
Give her a kiss,
Then introduce her as my X.
She would do the same to me
Whenever there was a girl around
Who was taking an interest in me.
I think we both enjoy
Messing with people’s heads!
Several people asked us
Why we split apart.
I will tell you this,
If you are going to have an X,
That is the best kind to have,
A jovial spirit
Who is always game for play.
