Boredom is perhaps
The most insidious,
Yet common, disease
Afflicting mankind.
It’s a pervasive dulling
Of the senses,
A profound numbness
That can affect
Every area of our lives
If we let it.
It’s a state of being
More dead than alive,
An unmotivated existence,
Impassioned by nothing.
It’s a subtle thief
Who slowly steals
Our zest for living,
Leaving us devoid
Of curiosity or interest,
Mechanically going
Through the motions
Of work and play.
Even the most ardent lovers
Grow weary
And inattentive
Under its onslaught.
Even the most skilled
And productive worker
Will wither and burn-out
Under its influence,
And end up making
Foolish mistakes.
It’s an apathetic
State of mind
Where a person must
Battle themselves
If they are to accomplish
Anything of note.
It’s the natural temptation
To be mischievously stupid
Without regard
To cost or consequences.
It’s a malady
Far more lethal
Than any other pestilence
Plaguing humanity,
Yet it has nothing
To do with what we are
Or aren’t doing
At any given time.
It’s simply an attitude
About the world around us,
A mental laziness
We allow to take hold.
