Beyond the Breakup

The couple squabbled
From day one.
Their chemistry
Was a volatile mix.
Maybe they never
Should have married
In the first place.
They fought over
Anything and everything.
It was kind of ironic,
But their splitting apart
Was one of the few things
They could agree on,
And even stranger yet,
It allowed them
To get beyond the pretense
Of being married,
To communicate
And say what each
Needed to say
To complete their relationship.
This in turn,
Gave them room
To become friends
Which they never were
While they were married.
