Beware of the Scorpion

Beware of the Scorpion,
For he will
Sting you if he can.
He is a creature
Of the desert
Or the jungle
Where it is him
Against the world,
And he sports
A venomous barb
For anyone who
Crosses his path.
There are plenty
Of loathsome varieties
Hiding out there,
But the two-legged kind
Are apt to cause you
The most anguish.
He may feign
That his toxic thorn
Is not really there,
Or that it’s meant
For someone else,
But not for you,
But don’t be fooled
By his civilized facade.
He will sidle up to you,
Sing your song
And dance your dance,
Pretending to be
A friend or an ally,
But it’s all a charade.
He merely waits for you
To let down your guard,
And the moment
He sees a chance,
He will flick his tail
And stab you in the back.
Why you ask
Is he so uncouth,
Why does he act
With such wrath,
And what did you do
To deserve such poison?
The only explanation
I can come up with
Is that’s simply
The nature of the beast!
