The King Cobra

A king cobra
Took up residence
On my doorstep
Of my elevated house
There in southern Thailand,
And every time
I opened the door,
Or came to the stairs
He would graciously
Slither down
Out of my way.
We had a cordial respect
For each other.
He never bothered me,
And I got to thinking of him
As my guardian,
A good luck charm,
Always there for me.
Eventually the villagers
Discovered him
And cornered him
In some brush nearby
And finished him off.
All I know is that
Soon after his demise,
I started having problems
With thieves raiding
The property
Which I never had
While he was on duty.
