Accountability

Without accountability
For the things we do,
We are little more than
Marauding teenagers
Out for a good time,
Mindless in our frenzy.
At the heart of accountability
Is the ability
To quantify our accomplishments.
Most of us have
Well defined measures
Which tell us whether or not
We have succeeded or failed
In the work we do,
But often we resist
Adopting similar standards
In other areas of our lives.
As a consequence,
We frequently have no yardstick
By which we can gage
The progress of our lives
And no sense of momentum.
Without that sense,
We quickly wear ourselves out
In the struggle of day to day life,
And lose sight of what we are up to.
Accountability allows us
To keep track of
Where we are at
And where we want to go,
And tells us clearly
When change is needed.
