A Student of English

She was an exchange student
Who came from Osaka, Japan
To learn the English language
Here in the United States.
She lived with us
While going to school.
One of her after school exercises
Was to listen to television and
To write down any words she heard
That she didn’t understand.
It just happened
That the popular movie “Shogun”
Was airing at the time,
And since it was about Japan
We all sat down to watch.
She busily wrote down words
And looked them up in her dictionary,
But one word had her stumped.
It was the term “pillowing”
And for the life of her
She couldn’t find it in her dictionary.
I never will forget
The expression on her face
And her utter embarrassment
When I explained
That it was a nice way of saying
Sexual intercourse.
A sense of humor
Is definitely a plus
When attempting to learn
A foreign language.
