Woman of my grandmother,
Dana’s, generation
Generally weren’t allowed
To work outside the home
Back in the late 1800s,
So they often
Busied themselves
During their leisure
Painting or sewing.
Dana took up oil painting,
But lacking any formal
Art education,
She had no cognizance
Of perspective,
And her paintings
Always seemed
Somewhat askew,
And relatively primitive.
She basically had
Grandma Moses’ style
Long before
Grandma Moses did.
She mostly painted landscapes
And pictures
Of the family house at Dover.
There are still
A number of her paintings
Floating around
Somewhere out there
Within our family
Nearly forty years
After she passed away.
Who knows,
It could be genetics
That has me skew
The perspective of
The verbal pictures
I paint as well!
