Impression Remembered

There was something
Familiar about her,
But for the moment
I couldn’t place where
I had seen her before.
I just knew that I knew her,
That our paths had crossed
A number of years ago,
And that she must have made
Quite an impression,
Because I couldn’t let it go
Until I remembered
Where we had met before.
She had worked for
The local newspaper
But that didn’t
Ring a bell at all.
We kept talking
And tickling the memory juices
Trying to figure
Where our respective circles
Might have crossed.
We traveled such divergent paths
That it wasn’t
Immediately obvious,
Then suddenly it registered,
I recalled that she had manned
The both next to mine
At the Ventura County Fair.
She stuck out in my memory
Because of the outrageously
Aggressive way
She had peddled subscriptions
To the paper.
She was a character
In her own right,
Able to make a fool of herself
And have fun while doing it.
She was now a used car saleswoman,
A job which called for
A rather dramatic toning down
Of her normal sales tactics.
No wonder I had trouble
Remembering where
I had met her before.
Anyway, we had a pretty good talk.
I had already bought a car
So the pressure was off.
It was one of those
Wide ranging conversations,
The kind when things click
And both people discover
They have a lot in common.
I like those kind of talks,
But they just don’t seem to
Happen often enough
By my way of thinking.
She seemed apologetic
That she currently had a boy friend,
And I took that as a compliment.
The conversation left me
Smiling and thinking to myself
“Yeah, I’m alive and kicking!”
