I was in northern Peru
Designing a diversion dam
When I was invited
For a three day holiday
At a beach bungalow
Owned by one of the locals.
I had neglected to consider
The intensity
Of the equatorial sun,
And was scorched
Within fifteen minutes of arrival.
I ended up hiding indoors
For next two and a half days.
My Peruvian hosts
Were able to bare
The full brunt of the sun
All day long
Without getting burnt.
Fortunately I was able to
Venture out after sunset
And could enjoy a swim then.
The warm ocean waves
Soothed my burns,
And greeted me with
The spectacular radiance
Of luminescent plankton
Which accented my swim.
Even the fact
That we survived on
Can after can of sardines
For those three days
Somehow added flavor
Of the holiday,
But was I ever
Glad to get back
To civilization.
