Changing Taste Buds

I may be dating myself,
But I remember when
The big milk chocolate
Hershey bars
Cost just twenty-five cents each.
They were
A chocoholic’s dream.
My mother was
The “Queen of Fudge,”
And I would have eaten
The whole pan full
If she had let me.
It’s different these days.
I can no longer tolerate
The sweetness
Of a lot of the things
I use to relish.
Conversely,
I have grown to love
Many of the foods
I hated as a kid
Such as Brussel Sprouts,
Asparagus, peas, olives, spinach
And Lima Beans.
Now if you are a parent
Struggling with a kid like me
Who would rather eat
Chocolate than greens,
Just understand,
It’s no more than
A passing phase,
Here today,
And gone in the next
Decade or two.
