I stumbled upon
The waterfall
While hiking through
The woods
One late August
Afternoon.
I had heard
Its rumblings
From perhaps
A quarter mile away,
Yet it still took me
Close to an hour
To traverse the brush
And rocky slope
To get where
I could see
What all the commotion
Was about.
The waterfall
Cascaded down
From a narrow channel
Chiseled into
A granite ledge,
And dropped
More than a hundred feet,
Thundering
As it pummeled
The boulders below.
A refreshing mist
Hung in the air
At the base
Of the falls
That refracted
The afternoon sun
Into a spectacular,
But simple rainbow,
The beauty and perfection
Of which,
Instantly buoyed
My spirits.
