The Old Sock Relationship

The initial flames
Of passion
All to often
Begin to
Flicker and sputter
Over time
As the newness
Wears off,
And familiarity
Sets in.
One couple developed
A rather bizarre,
But highly effective,
Way of keeping
The pizzazz alive
In their marriage.
It probably started
With a sock
Accidentally included
With a carefully
Wrapped gift,
But as time went on,
Long after
The original gift
Was forgotten,
The old sock
Kept being given
Back and forth
In increasingly
Devious ways.
It became their
Special formula
For saying
“I love you!”
And it was invariably
Returned
When the other
Least expected.
One time it was
Slipped under
A freshly delivered pizza,
And another time,
It was baked inside
A birthday cake.
It has been delivered
By Special Delivery
To the amusement
Of an entire office.
It was even presented
Along with
An awards plaque
In front of
Two thousand
Bemused people.
I laugh at the antics
Of those two,
And the many stories
Of their sock,
But come to think of it,
They have exactly
The kind of relationship
I would like to have,
One full of love
And playful spontaneity.
