A Hunger of the Spirit

It’s an underlying hunger
That stalks him
And drives him
Relentlessly on,
Drifting from town
To town,
From one job
To another,
And from one woman
To the next.
He has the restless spirit
Of a man
Perpetually searching
For something
He never quite finds.
No matter where he goes
Or what he accomplishes
He is plagued
By a irrational sense
Of something missing.
He has the countenance
Of a man
Constantly at war
With himself,
Never satisfied,
And never at peace
With the world around him
Or his lot in life.
