Going Through the Motions

Sometimes we wake up
And find ourselves
Asleep at the wheel,
Drifting along
With the ebb of flow
Of the tides of life
With no particular
Direction in mind,
And no particular
Purpose in sight.
At times like these
We may find
An emptiness
Deep inside,
A longing for
Something else,
And sense of
Dissatisfaction
With the ourselves
And the life we live.
We may discover
The dull pain of
A rock solid
But lifeless marriage
Or the frustration
Of a pointless job
Performed in the absence
Of passion,
One that we can easily do
In our sleep.
That is the price
We tend to pay
For not being
Responsible for
The life we lead,
For just going
Through the motions,
Passing time,
Or simply sleeping
Our life away.
