Fighting the Structure

He had chafed for years
Against the necessity
Of getting up each morning
At the crack of dawn
To do the work he did.
There was a discipline
Demanded by the company
He worked for
Which necessitated
He show up
Like clockwork each day
And that he work diligently
Until the day was done.
The structure he adopted
Got the job done,
But he always envied
Those who seemed
To be able to lead
A much less structured life.
What he couldn’t see
Was that even
An artist or a writer
Must follow a regimen
In order to get
Anything done.
The only difference was
His company dictated
His schedule,
Whereas the artist
And the writer
Must each determine one
That works for them.
