The Candy Man

I remember him
For the twinkle in his eye,
His playful spirit
And his friendly soul.
He would take time
With people like me
Who couldn’t
Make up their mind
What they wanted,
And he never seemed
Rushed or impatient
In dealing with them.
His disposition
Fitted him perfectly,
For he was the proprietor
Of the local candy store.
Several generations
Of sweet-toothed kids
Grew up frequenting his shop.
He always maintained
A vast multicolored supply
Of sugary treats
For us to drool over,
And in seemed like
He knew every child by name.
Although he and his shop
No longer occupy
That corner spot,
I, for one, fondly remember him
After all these years.
