He had lived a charmed life
Up to that point.
He never felt challenged,
And everything came easy.
Life was a game
And he played it well.
He had achieved
Both success and recognition
In the field of sports
As well as in business.
He took the rewards
And the accolades
As his rightful due,
Never feeling
A moment of gratitude
For anything
He had been given.
Only after he got hurt
And had to suffer
The indignity of helplessness
Could he begin to appreciate
The extraordinary fortune he had.
