It was a lazy summer afternoon,
Hot and sunny,
Without a cloud in the sky.
My wife and I
Had spent the morning
Touring the State Capitol
There in Sacramento
With our two young daughters,
And were looking
For a place to relax.
The soft green grass
In the shade of the trees
Of the Capitol grounds,
Seemed especially inviting,
Perfect for an afternoon siesta.
We laid out a blanket
And were sound asleep
Within minutes
Only to be rudely awaken
By cold water
Coming at us
From every direction.
We found ourselves
Stuck in the middle
Of a large sprinkler mine field
Confused as to
Which way to run,
Instantly educated
As to why the grass
Was so lush and green.
