The Wood Carver

He has become a local icon
After seventeen years
In his spot under the trees
On the outskirts
Of the town of Casitas Springs.
Five days a week
He is out there on Route 33
Sawing up logs
Making eagles, bears, dolphins
And just about anything wood
That someone might want.
His only tool is a chain saw.
It started out as a hobby
But when he retired
After 28 years of driving trucks
On only $117.50 a month
He decided to work a little harder
In order to make a living
For his wife and himself.
His style has changed a bit
Over the years
And sometimes he looks back
At some of the things he did before
And is a little embarrassed
But he keeps working at it,
And every now and then
Will take a day off and go fishing.
He is a fairly happy soul
Doing what he wants
In his own time
And in his own way
In his spot under the trees.
