The Voice We Hear

No wonder people accuse us
Of not listening
To what they say.
We may concentrate
With all our might,
Focus on hearing
Each word they say
As if it were
A kernel of gold,
But all we really
Pay attention to
Is the voice
Inside our head,
The one that tells us
What it thinks about
What they are saying.
Something invariably
Gets lost in translation.
