He just showed up one day
Coming from
Who knows where,
Looking kind of ragged,
Tired and dirty.
Mawd took him in,
Gave him a roof
Over his head
And food to eat.
He stayed for a while,
But must have had
Someplace else to go
Because one day
He just up and left,
Heading west
Off into the sunset
Never to be heard from again.
Mawd must have had
A soft spot for drifters like him
Because over the years
She maintained such a
Steady stream of them,
Here today and gone tomorrow.
That was the way she was,
A big hearted lady
And a sucker for every
Stray dog or tomcat
That came along.
