The Traveling Salesman

He was a weary road warrior,
A traveling salesman
Who had been working
Up and down
The Eastern Seaboard
For close to twenty years.
From his perspective
His life had resolved
Into an monotonous series
Of hotels and motels,
Coffee shops and roadway dinners.
One place seemed
Pretty much the same as the next,
One convention
No different than another.
He was a good salesman,
Or at least he had been until lately,
But his sales were in a slump.
He had an excellent product line,
But recently the competition
Had become fierce,
And a lot of his old customers
Were developing new alliances.
Basically he had a choice
If he wanted to continue selling,
He could either reinvent
What he was doing
With the existing company,
Or take on a new challenge elsewhere.
The start-up venture
Must have popped up
At the opportune moment,
For he waltzed off
As if he had a new lease on life.
