The Shattered Image

I used to think
All I could ever be
Was an engineer,
Relentlessly calculating
My life away
For a living,
Earning more than most,
But never enough
To get ahead
Or to buy my freedom,
For it was the only thing
I knew how to do.
I fought pitched battles
With myself
Over the tyranny
Of my profession,
And it wasn’t until
I shattered
The image I had of myself
And my career,
And proved to myself
That I was more than
Just an engineer,
That I could finally
Settle down and enjoy
Being an engineer.
Much to my surprise,
I discovered
It isn’t nearly as limited
As I had thought,
Financially or otherwise,
And it has lead me
On some incredible
Adventures afterall.
