The School of Hard Knocks

It’s our nature
To want to
Forego paying
The tuition,
But like it, or not,
We are enrolled.
We might wish
To skip
A class or two
Along the way,
For we are often
Not the best
Or most attentive
Of students.
In fact, many of us
Are outright rebellious,
And quite belligerent
About the quality
And quantity
Of education
We are getting.
More than likely,
We will need
To repeat
A few courses
Before the lessons
Finally sink in.
Even if we
Are an honor student,
And welcome
The challenges provided,
We can’t graduate,
And earn a diploma
That announces
We have learned all
That life has
To teach us,
For the process
Never ends.
