You meet someone
And something about them
Sparks your interest.
It could be their smile,
The color of their hair,
Their body type,
Their personality,
What they are wearing
Or how they are wearing it
That rivets your attention.
Maybe it is merely
The flavor of their words
Or perhaps they don’t
Say anything at all,
But you see something
In their eyes
That immediately tells you
They might be
Someone worth knowing
A whole lot better.
What you really want
Is some practical way
To break the ice,
To give intimacy a chance.
How do you initiate
Such a conversation?
Do you play the game
Of feigned disinterest,
Do you say everything
But what is on your mind,
Or do you come right out
And admit your interest?
This is probably
Not the best time
To pretend lack of interest
Or to go on a rampage
Of verbal diarrhea.
Why use a thousand words
When maybe ten will do?
Besides,
The more words you use,
The more likely
You are to trip over them.
I can tell you
From personal experience,
An economy of words
May be the difference
Between success
And failure
In the intimacy game.
