Him and his buddies
Had severed together
In the special forces.
They had been through
Hell and back together,
And in the process,
Had become
Inseparable friends
And steadfast antagonists.
When they finally
Married and settled down,
It only seemed natural
That they did so together,
Becoming neighbors.
It was one thing
When they were all
Young, single,
Wild and free,
And they did
A lot of crazy things
With and to each other,
But it was
Something else
When they each
Had children
Of their own.
As luck would have it,
He had two daughters
One and three years old,
Respectively,
And the couples
On either side had
Three-year-old sons.
It’s often difficult
To be a father
Of young girls,
Even in the best of times,
And his friends
Weren’t making it
Any easier.
The father of one
Of the boys
Jokingly inquired when
He was going to
Start his daughters
On birth control.
With a straight face,
The boy’s father
Told him he was worried
Because as parents,
They couldn’t
Always be home,
And with no one
To supervise them,
One thing would invariably
Lead to another,
And before they knew it,
His daughters would
End up pregnant.
The obvious fear
In his eyes
Was a source
Of endless amusement
To his friends,
For they all remembered
What they had been like
Before the tables
Were turned.
