Desert Rain

The summers were
Long, hot, dry and dusty
Most of the time
In Las Vegas, Nevada
Where I grew up,
But every now and then
The summer heat
Would be interrupted
By a sporadic shower,
There one minute
And gone the next.
While it lasted
The area would be pelted
By large drops
Of dirty warm water.
The rain filtered
The desert dust
From the air,
And the moisture
Would evaporate
Almost as quickly
As it fell,
Leaving a muddy
Footprint behind.
I loved the fragrance
Of cleansed air,
And the sudden
Drop in temperature
After one of those
Sudden showers.
