What does it take
To be complete
With someone
Who is already gone?
So often we feel
There is something more
We could have said,
Something we should have done.
We can berate ourselves
For the opportunity lost,
Wallowing in sadness
For the things not done,
But remorse is not our only option.
Our transgressions
Lie only in our heads
And in our hearts,
But exists nowhere else.
They are nothing more
Than conversations
We have with ourselves,
And conversations can be altered.
We can start
By forgiving ourselves
For the words not said
And any deed not done.
If we can choose to accept
Things exactly as they are
And exactly as they aren’t,
Then we are complete.
If we are present to our love
Even if it was unspoken,
And nothing further
Needs to be said,
Then we are complete.
If we can accept they are gone,
And appreciate who they were
Without begrudging ourselves
Any mistakes
We may have done,
Then we are complete.
If we can look
At what was done,
Or not done,
Without judging it
Good or bad,
Then we are complete.
If we choose
To be complete,
Then we will be free
To love again.
