The barber shop
Was just about
The most popular
Place in town.
You always knew
You would get
A face full of lather,
An ear full of gossip
Along with the best
Haircut around.
It functioned admirably
As town hall,
Area newspaper,
Local men’s club,
Political action committee,
And debate society.
That barber could
Talk you ear off
If you let him.
He could talk about
Anything, everything
And nothing
All at the same time,
And he loved
Nothing more than refereeing
A group of us
Debating the latest
Political intrigue.
In the midst of all that ruckus
And boisterous bickering,
There would usually be
A friendly game
Of chess or checker
Going on as well.
