Sources of Inspiration

A lot of people
Have asked me questions
About my narratives.
They wonder.
Where do I get
The inspiration
For the reflections
I write,
And they are curious
As to whether or not
I ever get writer’s block.
I find inspiration
In everyday life,
In the conversations
I have or hear,
In the people I meet,
And the situations
That I encounter.
Inspiration is all around me,
I just had to
Open my eyes to see it.
Writing short stories,
At least the way I do it,
Is an exercise
In being present to life,
And the more
I am present,
The more I find to see
And the more inspired I am.
As far as writer’s block,
I have never faced
That curse,
At least not head-on,
But I have lived
In mortal fear
That it will someday occur,
That if I were to stop writing
Even for a day or two,
I might never be able
To begin again.
I recognize my ability to write
As a major gift
That I have been granted
By right of birth
And arduous training.
It gives me the opportunity to say
What I always wanted to say
But never knew how.
All I can tell you
Is that I am committed
To go where it leads me,
And I have no idea
Which direction
That might end up being.
In a sense,
I’m just tagging along
For the ride.
